In recent past articles, I wrote about Why Should I Write a Book or Ebook, What Should I Write About, Who Is My Ideal Reader?, and The Cure for a Common Case of Writers Block. Next in this sequence, I wanted to offer some straight tips about how to write that book or ebook. Or basically how do you download your brain onto the page? This is a common issue I find with new writers; they either dont have the confidence or know-how to tackle the overwhelming idea of writing a book! They have great ideas and theyre experts at what they do, but theyve never written a book, and they look at it like some kind of scary monster.

Well, Im here to tell you its not! Its one of the most liberating feelings I know. To sit down at my computer and let my ideas spill out of my head, through my fingers, and onto the screen is exhilarating. If you follow some simple tips, and schedule the time to do this, your book or ebook could be done in less time than you imagine. Recently I held an interview on putting your ideas into an audio or video format. This could take the place of an ebook or book if you feel more comfortable talking into a recording device or filming yourself talking. Another interview I conducted showed you how to talk your book into a recording device and then have it transcribed. This is one of the quickest ways to get your book out of your head. And another interview I did talked about putting your expertise into the form of a tips booklet which could be anywhere from 12 to 24 pages. Your tips are approximately two sentences long, which I think would be pretty simple for most people to do. These are some of the quickest ways to get your ebook or book done.

Now, if you want to go the traditional route, my recipe is this: get your idea clear in your head as to why you want to write, what you want to write about, and who your ideal target is. Then create an outline/table of contents which takes the reader from where they are at the start of your book, to where you want them to be at the end. For example, if they have a problem that your book is a solution to, remind them of their problem at the start of the book, then take them through the steps to a solution as you share your expertise.

Once you have your outline, its just a matter of filling in the blanks with existing content you already have, or sitting down and pouring your knowledge onto the pages. Take your website content and past ezines, articles, and blogs and use that to get started. If you set aside two-hour blocks of time as often as you can, youll see your book quickly taking shape. Once you get over the initial feeling of overwhelm, youll find your rhythm and youll produce your book or ebook quickly. You just have to make sure to stay focused and know how to overcome your distractions or challenges. Plan ahead whatever you needwhether its an accountability partner or a ghostwriter/editor/coach like myself.

It seems that as soon as a piece of IT equipment or software has been installed it’s immediately superseded by a faster sexier version. So what was an ideal IT solution soon becomes out of date. Built-in-Obsolescence is a fact of life and even affects us at a basic level with our home computers. As new power hungry versions of software are introduced we are encouraged (forced) to upgrade our existing hardware to enable us to work normally again.

Specifying the right IT solution at the outset is a tricky business. First you need to identify the requirement and then build a business case. Many large organisations have such complicated and finicky tendering processes that can go on forever. This often makes a timely solution become redundant by the time it’s implemented. The other factor is the vendor and client do not always own up to the full cost of living with the system. They don’t take into account all its associated costs during the natural lifecycle. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is not focussed on only the capital cost, but in lots of cases it is all the Board is initially interested in.

Built-in-obsolescence drives the need for an IT system’s replacement, because it is old, outmoded, falling into disuse – both functionally and technologically. This becomes apparent particularly when the service it was designed to provide is no longer efficient or cost effective. For instance, when the scalability has reached its limits and the architecture is harder to maintain. Also old systems may need significant updates to cope with new legislation changes and compliance regulations. A big driver is of course when competitors have grabbed an edge by implementing new technology features. However it’s not all bad as a depreciation of an asset looks good from an accounting perspective.

Keeping ahead of the competition is every businesses challenge and the retail sector is no exception. Since the introduction of POS systems in the mid-1980s, retailers and customers alike have benefited from the technology. The POS system has improved retailing beyond recognition. It has enabled faster transaction times and helped to improve the overall shopping experience and increased customer satisfaction. Also the retailer has been able to better manage their inventory and business processes.

Now new developments are taking retail POS systems to a whole new level, helping to reduce labour costs and increase impulse purchases, both in stores and on-line. These include the introduction of in store self-service kiosks, managing personalised advertising and loyalty rewards and integrating the physical store with its online store customer activity, providing yet more new improved technology options to think about.

No matter how big or small the retail operation; there are some basic considerations that should be addressed when specifying a new IT system to help manage your IT investment effectively.

Start by selecting a partner and not just a supplier – the system is a significant investment, and you need a partner who will work with you to ensure that you get the most out of your investment – and is going to be around for the long term.

Plan for the future – think about technological advancements, business needs you may have planned for in the future for example expansion. Are you planning to add interactive kiosks, or develop e-commerce?

Branding – systems are available in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours now. It’s not like the old cash register on a counter; you can enhance your brand with the implementation of technology.

Reliability – you can’t afford to implement a system that proves itself unreliable. If your system is ‘down’ then you can’t make transactions which means you can’t run your business efficiently. Ask for references, and check out the level of support from the maintenance provider.

Think about what your business needs – EPOS software isn’t just about the front end at the till, it is a powerful management tool providing reams of information relating to your business. Reporting, stock control, purchase orders, price look-ups, cashing up, e-commerce, bar-coding etc. The list is endless, but not all systems offer everything so check them out and make sure you have a check-list when you have a demo. Does the software integrate with your accounts package? Payment options, what does the provider offer?

Speed and Ease of Use – there’s nothing worse than having queues at the checkout and the system is slow. Make sure the hardware is the right specification and the software is tested on the platform so that you know what you are getting and how it responds. Make it easy for the users to feel comfortable with the system, and ensure that training is delivered in a professional and comprehensive manner.

Rather than worry about the effects of obsolescence, businesses can benefit from pragmatic management of their IT systems which will at least help them prepare for the inevitable.

Here is a look at the Atlanta Division as of Dec. 2, 2009.

Boston Celtics (14-4): The Celtics are looking strong again now that they’re healthy. Kevin Garnett’s knee seems to be 100 percent, though he’s not quite the dominant player that he once was. He was already making the transition from superstar to solid player before his injury last season, though, and is doing less scoring as a result. He’s still a contributor on the boards and defensively.

Ray Allen has gotten off to a slow start, but he’s bound to round into form, and his struggles have not affected the team’s record much, if at all. Rajon Rondo has elevated himself to being one of the top point guards in the league. This team may coast at times throughout the season as they wait for the playoffs, the part of the season that really matters to this bunch.

Toronto Raptors (7-12): Chris Bosh is having the best season of his career and the Raptors are still losing. This does not bode well for the team convincing him to remain a Raptor beyond this summer. Andrea Bargnani is also having his best season as a pro, but the team is still struggling. A lot of nights, the Raptors are somewhat of a four-man team. Bosh, Bargnani, Hedo Turkoglu and Jose Calderon are really the only dependable players on a nightly basis, which hurts the team’s consistency. Jarrett Jack has played pretty well and DeMar DeRozan has shown promise, but this team seems to be stuck somewhere between contending and rebuilding.

Philadelphia 76ers (5-12): The record really surprises me. The Sixers are a talented club that has been pretty good over the past two seasons. They got Elton Brand back from injury and he’s played well, but they’re still losing games. Thaddeus Young has been coming on as of late, which should really help the team, but it’s going to take a team effort to fix things. Two of their promising youngsters, Louis Williams and Marreese Speights, have gone down with serious injuries.

They recently signed former Sixer great Allen Iverson in the wake of Williams’ injury, presumably to take on the starting point guard role. Iverson will give this team a boost, but he’s also a draw that will entice fans to purchase NBA tickets to see the team. Iverson can still make some electrifying plays and he could help this team right the ship.

New York Knicks (4-14): It’s no secret that the Knicks are readily awaiting the summer of 2010 and the chance to land a big name or two, but the team is definitely having a rough go of it in the meantime. The roster contains several NBA castoffs, but has a few promising young players as well, most notably Danilo Gallinari. Gallo has shown a lot of potential and could even be a future All-Star. The team is struggling now, but may not be far from contending for a playoff spot following the summer.

New Jersey Nets (0-17): The Nets are yet to win a game, and while this season’s prospects are not very good, I actually like where the Nets are headed. Injuries to Devin Harris and Courtney Lee have really hurt this season in the early going, but both of those guys are very good young players. Add in Brook Lopez and Terrence Williams and you’ve got a nice, young core of players. The Nets should be players in the free agent market this summer.

The holiday party season is here so what I thought I would do is suggest some party appetizer ideas for your Christmas party food. What you want to keep in mind to maintain a low-cost budget catering menu is to incorporate easy finger foods along with your holiday buffet.

As the party host, be creative with your presentation of your Christmas party food and make it easy for your guests to pick up and eat. Create an interactive buffet station by using skewers for your vegetables at the crudités station. Make a vegetable garden presentation using skewered vegetables “planted” in wheat grass.

At the dessert station, build your own fondue station. Again using skewers, offer strawberries, bananas, rice crispy treats, Oreos, marshmallows, to name a few easy finger foods your guests can choose from. If you are trying to watch your weight, select the fruit over the cookies and walk away from the dessert station before you dip into the chocolate!

Christmas party food has a tendency to be very rich and abundant in calories so if you are trying to watch your weight, select the low-calorie alternatives.
